What is the major theme/message of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald?

What, in your opinion, is the message in The Great Gatsby? I've read the book, and some notes etc, and am a bit confused. I know it is something to do with the pursuit of wealth, inability to control time, shallowness of the upper cles, but could someone please explain it all simply and clearly?
